Gezelle wrote this poem for the celebration of the first mass of the Jesuit Remi Louwyck, missionary in India.
Gij zijt de bergen opgeklommen was an occasional poem for the first mass of the Jesuit Remi Louwyck, who left for India in October 1886. Louwyck spent a long time in the Himalayas and wrote colourful letters to his family. They were published in the Gazette van Brugge and collected. Lowyck later became a priest in Calcutta. Gezelle wrote the text at the request of Remi’s brother Gustaaf Louwyck. Gezelle also was the text designer of the entire prayer card, which was executed in neo-gothic style. In blue pencil he noted that he wanted to check the proof.
