Meet Guido Gezelle. Possibly the most important poet of Flanders, he worked as a priest and a teacher but also as a journalist, linguist and translator. His tremendous influence on Flemish culture is comparable to that of Burns, Yeats or Longfellow on English culture. During the Flemish revival of the second half of the nineteenth century he raised popular catholic culture and language to an unparalleled aesthetic level.
