In 1855 the American poet Henry W. Longfellow published an epic poem about the Indian warrior Hiawatha. Together with his students Gezelle began to translate parts of it within the same year. Thirty years later this resulted in the full translation of The Song of Hiawatha. He made intense use of ancient Flemish words from his linguistic research.
