Shortly after his transfer to Courtrai, Gezelle took on the editing of the Courtrai weekly De Vrijheid at the request of Mayor Henri Nolf. The newspaper was succeeded in 1876 by De Gazette van Kortrijk, founded by Joris Beyaert. Gezelle contributed to this newspaper for years, including a cultural section "Leermaren" and the "Ask me Window" involving questions about dialect words.
