Victor Huys, son of Ivo Huys, blacksmith, and Isabella-Clara Ghesquiere, was a fellow student of Guido Gezelle at the major seminar in Bruges. He was ordained priest on 10.07.1854, one month after Gezelle. He was a teacher in Roeselare from 1853 till 1862, where he was one of Gezelle’s colleagues. In September 1862 he was appointed curate in Wervik and from 1874 he pastored the Sint-Katrien parish in Zillebeke for no less than thirty years. His writings included Het leven van Baekelandt (The life of Baekelandt) and De legende van Sint-Franciscus (The legend of Saint Franciscus).
