Matthias De Vries graduated in Literature from the State University of Leyden on December 13th, 1843. He started his professional career as a history and Dutch language teacher at the Municipal Highschool in Groningen. He was appointed member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandsche Letterkunde (Dutch Literature Society) on June 20th, 1844. On November 28th, 1849 he became professor in Grningen and in 1852 in Leyden. There he taught language and literature and till 1860 also national history. He resigned on September 15th, 1891. Along with Lambert Allard te Winkel he compounded the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (Dictionary of the Dutch Language), using the De Vries-te Winkel orthography, as it was named after them later on. He was a foreign honorary member of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Taal- en Letterkunde (Royal Flemish Academy for Language and Literature)
