Louis Gilliodts studied in Liège and obtained his doctorate in law there in 1850. He took lessons at the Paris l'Ecole des Chartes. He was admitted to the Bar of Liège (1853) and that of Bruges (1855). He married Eugenie Van Severen (1824-1859) in 1858. She died in childbirth. In 1906 Romanie Vandenbussche (1873-1926) became his second wife. On October 14th, 1868 he became curator of the archives of the city of Bruges. He wrote "Inventaire des Archives de la ville de Bruges", which was supplemented by Edward Gailliard. He wrote in James Weale's magazine "La Flandre" and in "Handelingen van Société d'Emulation".
