Leonardus Vandemaele was born in 1840 as son of a farm labourer. Even before he was ordained priest on 4 June, 1863 he was appointed teacher at the college in Tielt on 21 September, 1862. He became a teacher at the college of Saint Louis in Bruges on 14 October 1863, and at the college in Diksmuide on 27 September, 1864. He became a curate in Dudzele on 21 March, 1865, in Meulebeke on 17 July, 1867 and in Bruges on 13 December, 1871, and was finally appointed parish priest in Tiegem on 12 September, 1879 and in Hooglede on 12 February, 1885. He died in Hooglede in 1910.
