Juliaan Claerhout was the son of Constant Claerhout, a farmer, and Amelia De Volder and was ordained priest on 22.12.1883. He was a teacher at the college in Tielt (18.09.1884) and at the teacher training college in Torhout (10.09.1887). Next he was a curate in Sint-Denijs (23.09.1899), a school principal in Pittem (24.11.1894) and a parish priest in Kaster (17.02.1911). Claerhout was renowned for his archaeological excavations in Pittem and Dentergem. He published several articles in the magazine Het Belfort (The Belfry) and was closely involved with Gezelle’s magazine Biekorf (Beehive).
