Joseph Ryelandt belonged to a noble family in Bruges. With the support of Edgar Tinel he perfected himself in music. In 1924 he became director of the Brugean Municipal Conservatory. Ryelandt composed songs, chamber music, orchestral works and religious music. In 1894 he wrote the music for a cantate on the blessed Idesbald, for which Gezelle wrote the lyrics, but a year later he refused to compose the choral singing for the procession. In 1895 he and Gezelle wrote De XIV Stonden of de bloedige dagvaard ons Heeren. In all he composed 27 Gezelleliederen and five choral compositions based on texts by Gezelle, as well as an essay, Guido Gezelle. Etude littéraire (1920).
