Joannes Van Den Weghe

Joannes Van den Weghe, son of Josephus, Martinus Van den Weghe, inn keeper and coal merchant, and Amelia, Beatrix Bouckaert, was ordained priest in Bruges on 20 December, 1873. He studied antiquity and literature in Leuven. In October 1875 he became a teacher at the college of Saint Louis in Bruges and in October 1877 at the college in Poperinge. Next he worked as a curate in Bellegem (29.08.1885) and as a parish priest in Houtem (30.04.1895). At Joannes' request Gezelle wrote in 1890 the communion poem "Marietje, welk een dag is dit" (Little Mary, What a Day This Is" for his family member Marie Van Den Weghe
