Initially Jan Broeckaert was town secretary and treasurer of the Almsdeed and Almshouse Desk in his birth place Wetteren, and later he became a registrar at the District Court there. He was the author of books on the history of Wetteren and its surrounding communities, amongst other things. Several works, in co-authorship with Frans De Potter, were prized by the Royal Flemish Academy in Brussels : History of the communities of the province of East-Flanders (Ghent, from 1862 onwards), Statistical treatise on the community of Nazareth (Brussels, 1869), Antoon Van Dijck (Brussels, 1873), About Belgian peasantry (Brussels, 1880).
