Honoré Cardoen was the son of Charles Cardoen, farmer, and Melanie Ghesquière. He was ordained priest on 30.05.1896. Next he became teacher at the Saint Leo college in Bruges (23.12.1895). On his request Gezelle wrote the marriage poem "Gij zult den akkergrond" (Thou shalt the Arable Land). for his brother Juliaan Cardoen and Marie Maes. He later became curate in Rumbeke (28.08.1903) and parish priest in Spiere (16.01.1924).
