Alexandre Bonvarlet

Alexandre Bonvarlet was married to Constance Du Rin (1829-1863). He was a merchant in Northern France and a regionalist. On 10.01.1855 he joined the Comité Flamand de France, and soon became its deputy secretary and treasurer, and finally its president from 1876 till 1899. As a historian he had a significant interest in old books, etchings and paintings and published on these subjects in the committee’s Annals and Bulletins. In 1866 he was also appointed Danish consul. Bonvarlet was a member of several scientific societies in France and Belgium and foreign honorary member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Linguistics and Literature from 29.12.1890 till 02.10.1899. He also received a knighthood in the Order of Leopold.
