Adolf Verriest was a lawyer and alderman in Kortrijk. He was an active participant in Kortrijk’s cultural life between 1870 and 1890 (e.g. as chairman of the Davidsfonds and board member of the music school). He was a poet and publisher (Gedichten en aanspraken. Kortrijk, 1893). He composed songs and often requested song translations from Gezelle. Gezelle wrote some occasional poems for him, such as: "Adolf, mijn vriend, mijn advocaat" (Adolf, My Friend, My Lawyer). Gezelle was a family friend and supported Adolf in his political activities.
